SURVEY AND INVESTIGATION OF CULTURE-HISTORICAL HERITAGE ALONG THE LATVIAN SECTION OF THE RAIL BALTICA LINE

The Institute of Latvian History, University of Latvia, performed the investigation of culture-historical heritage along two stretches of the planned Rail Baltica railway line:
• stretch 1: border with Estonia – River Salaca – River Kurliņupe (34.8 km)
• stretch 5: Jelgavas iela in Riga – Riga Airport – River Misa (48.3 km)
Archive documents, maps and published material on the culture-historical heritage in the area of the planned railway line was investigated and extensive fieldwork carried out, involving visual assessment of the territory, coring, metal detector survey and test-pitting. Information about the identified culture-historical values was compiled and appropriate recommendations submitted.
Assessment of the archaeological heritage and fieldwork involved archaeologists from the institute: V. Bebre, V. Bērziņš, R. Brūzis, I. Doniņa, E. Guščika, M. Kalniņš, E. Plankājs, A. Vāvere, Ē. Vēmanis, V. Visocka un M. Zunde. Historians A. Čerpinska and K. Zariņš compiled and evaluated written sources and maps.
